Welcome New Cornell Faculty

The Course Materials staff at The Cornell Store is here to help you navigate all of your options to select course materials for your students. We look forward to working with you!

How do I order course materials for my students?

We use an online platform for collecting course materials adoptions from instructors. Each term, you will receive an email from us containing a personalized link that will take you to the website to order your course materials.

What is the deadline for ordering course materials?

There really isn’t one, but the earlier you submit your orders, the more time we have to find low-prices used copies, rental options, and digital options, all of which can save your students a lot of money. Please submit your orders as soon as your schedule is finalized and you have made a decision.

How will my students know which books to buy?

Your students have a personalized booklist available to them when they log in with their Cornell NetID. They can order books online at store.cornell.edu or print their booklist at our in-store kiosks.

It’s cheaper for students to just buy their books online, right?

Sometimes. When your students shop for their books on our website, store.cornell.edu, they’re shown our prices alongside our online competitors’ prices. They can choose where to buy each book individually, and the checkout process is easy! We want them to get the best deal, so this is our way of offering transparent pricing and putting the choice in their hands.

Can my students rent their books at The Cornell Store?

Yes! We offer many titles for rent here in the store and through our website.

Does The Cornell Store offer ebooks?

Yes! We offer hundreds of ebook titles through our ebook partner, RedShelf. For more information on the RedShelf ereader, check out www.redshelf.com.

What if I want to build a course packet?

We have staff dedicated to custom publishing right here in the store. As a service to faculty and their students, we can take care of all copyright clearances, cleanup and organization of documents, and printing and selling your custom course materials. Email custompub@cornell.edu for more information

What should I ask my publisher representatives when they visit?

Be sure to ask these three questions when speaking with your publisher representatives:

  1. What are all of the available formats for the materials I’m considering?
  2. Do you have any data on improved learning outcomes from use of the digital/homework/online component you are recommending?
  3. What is the net price for the product? (This is the bookstore’s cost. With this information, you can contact us to find out what the price to students will be.)

Is there anything else I should know about Course Materials at Cornell?

Yes! The Cornell Store offers a program called Instant Access, which helps to lower the cost of course materials for our students here at Cornell. With this program, all students registered for a particular course automatically receive their digital course materials through Blackboard on or often before the first day of class, and they pay the lowest price possible. Students have the ability to opt out of the Instant Access ebook and purchase their course materials elsewhere, but very few do so because of the extremely competitive pricing. Students who do not opt out and choose to keep the ebook access are billed to their bursar account. Contact Sara Ellenberger at sce27@cornell.edu for more information on Instant Access.
